“99%+ purity” sounds simple. It looks like one number that tells you whether a product is high quality. But purity results are more useful when you understand what was tested, how it was tested, and what the percentage does—and does not—tell you.

For pet parents, that context matters. A strong purity result can be an important quality signal, but it should never be the only detail you look at. Product identity, batch information, testing method, storage guidance, format, and veterinary input all belong in the same conversation.

In simple terms, a 99%+ purity result means that, within the limits of the laboratory method used, the main compound made up at least 99% of the material detected in that analysis.

That leaves less than 1% represented by other detected material, which may include related compounds, breakdown products, manufacturing byproducts, or other measurable impurities. The exact meaning depends on the sample, the test method, and the way the laboratory calculates the result.

A simple way to picture it

If a laboratory analysis separates a sample into 100 measurable parts and the intended compound represents more than 99 of those parts, the report may describe the sample as 99%+ pure. That is a simplified explanation, but it captures the basic idea.

Purity is not the same as the percentage inside the finished product

This is one of the most important distinctions to understand. A purity result does not necessarily mean that 99% of an entire capsule, vial, or finished product is the active peptide by weight.

For example, a capsule may also contain a capsule shell and inactive ingredients used to support manufacturing, consistency, or delivery. If a peptide ingredient is reported as 99%+ pure, that result refers to the material tested under the laboratory method—not to the total weight of every component in the finished capsule.

That means a 99%+ purity result for a peptide ingredient should not be confused with the labeled amount per capsule, the total capsule weight, or the total number of capsules in the package. Those are separate label details.

How HPLC is commonly used to measure purity

One laboratory method often used for peptide purity testing is high-performance liquid chromatography, usually shortened to HPLC.

HPLC works by moving a prepared sample through specialized laboratory equipment that separates its components. As those components pass through the system, the instrument records signals that appear as peaks on a chromatogram. The main compound should appear as the dominant peak, while smaller peaks may represent other detected material.

A laboratory may calculate purity by comparing the area of the main peak with the total area of the relevant detected peaks. When the main peak represents more than 99% of that total, the report may show a purity result of 99%+.

A strong HPLC result can support confidence in chemical purity, but the result is only as meaningful as the sample, method, detector, calculations, and documentation behind it.

What a purity result does not prove by itself

A 99%+ purity number is useful, but it is not a complete quality profile. By itself, it does not automatically prove all of the following:

  • Correct identity: The main detected material still needs to be confirmed as the intended compound.
  • Correct amount: Purity is different from verifying the labeled quantity or concentration.
  • Absence of every contaminant: One method may not detect microbes, endotoxins, heavy metals, residual solvents, water, salts, or substances outside the method’s scope.
  • Safety for a specific pet: A laboratory purity result does not determine whether a product is appropriate for an individual dog or cat.
  • Effectiveness: Purity does not guarantee a particular outcome.

Why the exact test method matters

Not every laboratory method measures the same thing. Even within HPLC testing, details such as the column, solvent system, detector, wavelength, sample preparation, reference standard, and calculation method can affect what the instrument detects and how the result is reported.

Some substances may not be visible under a particular detector or method. Water, salts, certain solvents, or other non-detected material may not appear in the same way as the peptide-related peaks used for the purity calculation. That is another reason a purity percentage should not be interpreted as a complete inventory of everything in the sample.

You do not need to be a chemist to review a report, but you should be able to see that the method is named, the laboratory is identified, and the result is linked to a specific sample or batch.

What to look for on a Certificate of Analysis

A Certificate of Analysis, often called a COA, should make the purity claim easier to verify. When reviewing a COA, look for the following details:

  • Product or sample name: The tested material should be identified clearly.
  • Batch or lot number: The report should connect to the batch being offered.
  • Testing laboratory: The laboratory name and contact information should be visible.
  • Test method: The report should state how purity was measured, such as HPLC.
  • Result: The reported percentage should be easy to locate and interpret.
  • Testing date: The report should show when the analysis was completed.
  • Supporting chromatogram or data: When provided, this can help show how the result was produced.

The batch connection matters

A polished report is not enough if it cannot be connected to the product in front of you. The lot or batch information on the COA should match the product documentation whenever batch-specific testing is claimed.

How purity applies to capsules and vials

Format changes how you should interpret product information. BPC-157 Capsules and TB-500 Capsules are finished capsule products, so pet parents should review the peptide information together with the labeled amount per capsule, capsule count, inactive ingredients, storage instructions, and veterinary guidance.

BPC-157 Vial and TB-500 Vial are different formats with different handling and documentation considerations. A vial purity result should not be treated as interchangeable with the finished-product details of a capsule. Research-format vials should also not be assumed to be pet-use products simply because they contain a familiar peptide name.

In other words, purity helps describe the tested compound. It does not erase the differences between formats or replace the rest of the label.

Why “99%+” is better when it is supported by transparency

A percentage becomes more trustworthy when a brand explains where it came from. Clear quality information should make it possible to understand:

  • who performed the testing;
  • which method was used;
  • which batch was tested;
  • what the result applies to;
  • and which additional checks were or were not included.

That kind of transparency is more valuable than a large “99%+” badge with no supporting context. The goal is not to overwhelm pet parents with laboratory language. It is to give them enough information to ask informed questions.

If a product advertises 99%+ purity, consider asking:

  1. Was the testing performed by an independent third-party laboratory?
  2. Is the result connected to the current batch or lot?
  3. Was identity confirmed separately from purity?

  5. Were additional contaminants tested, and which ones?
  6. Can I view the complete COA rather than only a summary badge?
